The MENA-can shelter :

A sanctuary for threatened Human rights defenders

Human rights defenders are on the frontline of defending human rights and promoting social change around the world. They are people who stand up for freedom, justice and peace often at great personal risk. As a result of their actions, they often faced harassment, discrimination and threats even more in the MENA region ranking at the bottom of most Human Rights indices.

Recognising that human rights defenders in the MENA region, face unique circumstances, it is crucial to ensure their safety and security.

At the core of our mission is protecting and supporting Human Rights defenders with the provision of temporary relocation for individuals who find themselves under imminent threat and pressure in their home countries.

Baytoona (our home), it’s more than just a shelter; beyond its safe roof, these defenders find more than just safety. It’s a space of a wider supportive ecosystem. We offer Human Rights defender a safe and inspiring environment where they are able to re-energize and reflect on their work. During their stay, they are not left alone. Each defender is paired with a steward, offering guidance and companionship. They’re also linked to a vast network of like-minded organizations, fostering solidarity and alliances that amplify their collective efforts for change.

Human rights defenders receive as well support from the MENA-can “Safety and Security Clinic”, a holistic program providing training in digital security to safeguard their online presence, physical skills to navigate challenging environments, and crucially, psychosocial support to safeguard  mental well-being.

Through our “Baytoona shelter” initiative, MENA-can not only provides a sanctuary but empowers these defenders to continue their mission with renewed strength and skills.
